Monache Hazard Tree Removal Project

This project lies entirely within Sequoia National Forest Lands on the Western Divide Ranger District. The GBI is implementing this project under a Supplemental Project Agreement pursuant to a Master Stewardship Agreement between GBI and the US Forest Service.

This project consists of felling and removal of hazard trees present at the Camp One and Two dispersed recreation areas near Johnsondale, CA. A large number of dead hazard trees (and a small number of fire-injured live hazard trees) resulted from the Windy Fire (2021), making the area unsafe for visitors to camp and/or recreate within.

Prior to the Windy Fire, a number of local tribes met at this area annually, but have been unable to do so due to the unsafe post-fire conditions.

The purpose of this project is to restore safety within the area for all those that recreate there, as well as to prepare the area for possible reforestation. Methods of tree removal involve mechanized logging, including: feller bunchers and rubber-tired or track-mounted log skidders; conventional logging systems that employ timber fallers with chainsaws and rubber- or track-mounted log skidders.

All oak to be cut shall be felled, bucked, decked, and left. Up to 4 – 5 of the largest downed logs per acre may be left upon agreement between Sale Administrator and Contractor. Trees and logs greater than 4” in diameter and 3’ in length and not meeting specifications for removal will be piled for burning by USFS.

This project has significant cultural resources sites which will require tribal monitoring during implementation. These sites are flagged. Hazard trees will be required to be treated in these areas. Mitigation measures will be site specific and determined during implementation between tribal monitors, Sale Administrator, and contractors.
