Remembering James

Remembering James

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of James Arriola. James was a valued member of the GBI community whose kindness, dedication and unwavering belief in others left a lasting impact on the CRS program where he worked, and on everyone fortunate enough to work with him.

As shared by Karen B. Supak, CRS Program Manager, said that James’s influence was both personal and foundational to the program’s growth. “For someone you once described as talking too much, you’d be surprised at my loss for words now. I suppose I’ll start at the beginning as I spill my gratitude. Thank you, James. Thank you for choosing my resume from a stack of crew lead applications for Lake Mead in 2022 to instead be the GBI CRS Program Manager that had the honor of building this program with you. I would not be here now had you not recognized in me something I didn’t yet see in myself. You changed my entire life when you chose me. Thank you.” Karen credits James with standing beside her through the hardest and most formative moments of growing CRS. Together, they navigated the challenges that come with building a program from the ground up.

James’s belief in people was a defining part of his leadership. Crew member SB reflected on how that belief shaped their own path at GBI. A little over a year ago after her interview James called her and asked a question many of us came to know well: “Do you want the good news or the bad news first?” he asked. Of course he led with the bad, “you can’t start tomorrow,” then came the good, “but you got the job!” In that single call, James didn’t just offer a job, he opened a door. Setting the tone for a career shaped by trust, encouragement and belief in the work GBI does. “He had such a profound impact  on my time here at GBI” SB shares.

James’s passion for his work at GBI was unmistakable and deeply influential. Everyone found his conviction grounding. James wholeheartedly believed in GBI, the CRS program and the value of supporting public lands; he inspired others to believe in their worth too. That confidence strengthened teams, steadied new seasonal employees, and helped shape a workplace where people felt supported and valued.

James approached even the most routine updates with care and curiosity. From reading daily logs for a new “dig” to submitting payroll, his enthusiasm reminded those around him that every task matters and that personal growth lives in the small moments. Through his presence, James helped build and sustain a CRS team capable of navigating rapid growth while maintaining a strong sense of purpose and connection.

CRS Program Administrative Coordinator, Hannah Scalaro, reflected on the personal impact James had on her and so many others. “It’s hard to believe that someone I met in person only once could have such a huge impact on me (he in Las Vegas and Hannah in Reno). James was truly one of a kind. I don’t think I ever heard him say a negative thing. Even when he was frustrated, he could somehow spin it into something positive.” James made sure people knew they were appreciated, fostering a culture of kindness and respect that extended well beyond his role. Hannah also shared how much joy James found in every part of life; from taking his daughter to buy Taylor Swift albums to camping trips with his Scout Troop and welcoming new employees to the team.

Similar generosity of spirit was identified by Chelsea Stutz, CRS Program Director: “never have I worked with someone so genuinely selfless and ready to help anyone who asked at any time. You helped build the CRS Team and kept it afloat through massive changes/growth.” James’ leadership and reliability left a lasting imprint on the program’s success. Chelsea reflected on how meaningful it was to join a team already shaped by his knowledge and positivity. “I’ll miss the stories about hiking and camping, hearing about your kids and seeing you on calls. I will miss you.”

James’ impact in GBI lives on through the people he hired, supported, encouraged and believed in. He helped curate a workplace rooted in optimism and care and sincerely changed lives; his presence will be felt for years to come.
