This project lies entirely within Sequoia National Forest Lands on the Hume Lake Ranger District. GBI is implementing this project under a Supplemental Project Agreement pursuant to a Master Stewardship Agreement between GBI and the US Forest Service (USFS). The Project is located in Township 14 South, Range 27 East, Sections 11-14 and 23-26, and Township 14 South, 28 East, Sections 19 and 30, Mount Diablo Base and Meridian. A Project Area Map of the treatment areas is included in Exhibit K as a separate
attachment.
This project is a part of the larger Eshom Ecological Restoration Project whose purpose is to establish highly diverse vegetation mosaics, allow for safe and effective fire suppression, and increase habitat suitable for old forest dependent species. The objective of the Hogback Manual Project is to prepare for USFS performed prescribed burns by removing ladder fuels, reducing fuel continuity, and building containment lines. The project consists of hand thinning and piling of trees and brush less than 8 inches DBH and establishing 3.5 miles of control line, totaling 357 acres. Hand work and prescribed fire are intended to reduce excessive fuel build up and reduce the risk of stand-replacing wildfire in and near low-to-mid elevation forests, foothill communities, and private inholdings.
